MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024

The EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme is due to open on 10/04/2024 and  the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies welcomes applications for the European Postdoctoral Fellowship competition. Note that the OSGA does not support Global Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Postdoctoral Fellowships can last between 12 and 24 months and can include additional support to carry out the placement of up to 6 months in a non-academic organisation at the of the fellowship.  Candidates need to check carefully the detailed guidance for the scheme to ensure they are eligible, one published by the funder. The key criteria (not exhaustive) are:

  • Candidates should have a doctoral degree by the time of the deadline for applications (11 Sept 2024).
  • Candidates must have a maximum of eight years’ experience in research, from the date of the award of their doctoral degree.
  • Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.

Before your application can be submitted to the funder it has to be approved for submission by the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) as host University Department and also needs to be seen by University Research Services. Therefore,  OSGA holds an annual internal competition to decide which application(s) will be put forward under the scheme. Submitting an Expression of Interest

From 13 May 2024 to 8 July 2023 OSGA welcomes expressions of interest, that will be evaluated by the OSGA Research Committee on two cut-off dates 6/06/2024 and 15/07/2024. The OSGA Research Committee will short-list candidates based on their expression of interest and CV.  Priority will be given to proposals that could foster collaborative cross-regional and cross-country interdisciplinary projects, in line with  OSGA Thematic Research Clusters:

  • Global and regional orders: hybrid authoritarianism and change.
  • Social and political activism: civil-society activism, comparative protest events, theories of hegemony and resistance
  • Institutional change: in education, welfare and health systems
  • Intersectional and gender inequalities: class, gender and race
  • Methods: methods and ethics in Area Studies research

And the Hub on Global Experiences of Gender in an Age of Care Crises and Transformation.

All Expressions of Interest must have the agreement and confirmed support from an OSGA supervisor. It is essential that interested candidates make contact with a permanent post-holder in the OSGA who would support them in carrying out an MSCA postdoctoral fellowship in the School. Those interested should send a two-page CV, including a list of publications; two-page outline of the proposed research (including aims, objectives of the project, and its research questions, methodology, and outcomes); name of the OSGA’s academic staff member who is willing to act as a mentor to research@area.ox.ac.uk.

Submitting the application

All applicants who expressed their interest will be informed of the outcome.  Only the successfully shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a draft proposal (pdf of the full application, further details will be provided) by the end of 29 July 2024 to be reviewed by the OSGA Research Committee.

  • By 29 August 2024, the selected candidates will need to send their final version of the full application to   research@area.ox.ac.uk and confirm that they have completed all the sections on the EU Portal, but they DO NOT need to submit it until that will have received confirmation the official institutional approval from the University of Oxford Research Services.
  • The funder deadline for this call will be on 11 September 2024 at 17:00 Brussels time.

 MSCA European Postdoctoral Fellowships: secondment opportunities

If your application will be led by another organization including an optional secondment during the fellowship that you would like to undertake at OSGA, please contact research@area.ox.ac.uk for more information. Researchers receiving a Postdoctoral Fellowship may opt to include a secondment phase, within the overall duration of their fellowship in any country worldwide. The second phase can be a single period or be divided into shorter mobility periods.

  • For European Postdoctoral Fellowships, secondments cannot exceed one-third of the requested duration of the action (excluding from the duration of the action any additional period for a non-academic placement) and should be in line with the project objectives, adding significant value and impact to the fellowship.
  • For Global Postdoctoral Fellowships, optional secondments are permitted for up to one-third of the outgoing phase. A maximum of three months of such secondments can be spent at the start of the project at the beneficiary (or associated partners linked to the beneficiary), allowing the researcher to spend time there before going to the associated partner in the Third Country. This period of maximum of three months will be considered as part of the outgoing phase. Requests for further information are welcome.

Horizon Europe - Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships 2022

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) provides opportunities for researchers and organizations under Horizon Europe. Fellowships will be offered to excellent researchers, undertaking international mobility either to or between the EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries, as well as to associated Third Countries.

The following fellowships are available:

  • HORIZON-MSCA2022-PF-01-01 – European postdoctoral fellowships, with a budget of €218.45 million;
  • HORIZON-MSCA2022-PF-01-01 – Global postdoctoral fellowships, with a budget of 38.55 million.

UK is currently eligible to host 2022 MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships (as per the EU’s Q&A on UK participation), even though the UK’s association with Horizon Europe has not yet been formalized. If there is any news until the deadline, we will inform applicants and update our website. 

Details about the scheme are available on the Work Programme 2021-2022.  Eligibility and financial rules are available on the  MSCA Guide for Applicants published by the funder of the call page.  Please note that your actual salary would be paid in £ sterling and the relevant exchange rate will not be known until close to the date that a fellowship starts. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) will continue providing opportunities for researchers and organizations under Horizon Europe. Fellowships will be offered to excellent researchers, undertaking international mobility either to or between the EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries, as well as to associated Third Countries. The goal of the Individual Fellowships is to enhance the creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers, wishing to diversify individual competence in terms of skill acquisition through advanced training, international and intersectoral mobility.

The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies will select and support excellent experienced researchers of any nationality and age, which comply with MSCA mobility rules.

Those who are interested to apply for this scheme should note the following OSGA internal application procedure:

By  24th June (deadline extended on 10th  June 2020), please send to research@area.ox.ac.uk (indicating in the subject line your name and "MSCA IF 2020")

  • a personal statement, where they specify the type of action, their eligibility to the action in the light of call rules, the name of a potential supervisor in the School; the name of organisation hosting the secondment and/or the out-going phase (where relevant), project duration.
  • an abstract of your proposal (max. 2,000 characters, with spaces) to clearly explain: the objectives of the proposal, how they will be achieved and their relevance to the Work Programme;
  • a copy of your CV prepared according to the Marie-Curie Individual Fellowship guidelines (Part B-2 page 42, Guide for Applicant).
  • the first draft of your proposal (that should consist of Part B1 of the standard proposal template),  

By the end of June 2020, the candidates will be informed of the outcome. 

By  10th July 2020, the shortlisted candidates for the OSGA’s support need to send  to research@area.ox.ac.uk  their complete proposals, including Part A, B and B1 (please, send pdf file). 

By 20th August 2020 complete your complete application  on the EC portal but do not submit via the online system.  Because of the formal institutional approval is required both from the Head of School and from an administrative officer on behalf of the host institution, OSGA will formally approve the applications and submit them to the University’s Research Services Office for the approval. The University Research Services will inform the candidates when the application is approved and the application can then be submitted via the EU Portal.

The proposals selected for the OSGA’s support must be completed for the OSGA Research Commitee review by 6th July 2019. The complete proposal, including Part A, B and B1, should be send as pdf files to research@area.ox.ac.ukThen the OSGA internal deadline to complete on the EC portal the final draft of your complete application will be 27th August 2019.
