Professor Marnie Howlett

Associate Professor of International Relations in Eastern Europe and Eurasia

I am a political scientist and methodologist working at the intersection of geopolitics, cartography, borders, and nationalism within the former Soviet Union, with a particular focus on Ukraine. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and public opinion research, my work explores how borders and territoriality shape political attitudes and grassroots dynamics.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, I have led and contributed to several projects on the war, including public opinion research on territorial concessions and perceptions of war outcomes. I am currently working on two book projects examining how territorial cartographies shape contemporary Ukrainian politics and the motivations of ordinary Ukrainians who joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion.

My broader research interests also include qualitative methodologies and research ethics, as well as the use of digital, visual, and spatial methods for political science and international relations research. I have several ongoing projects on ethical and reflexive research in contexts of war and conflict and with hard-to-reach populations.

I hold PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), an MA in Political Studies, and a BA (with High Honours) in International Studies from the University of Saskatchewan.
