Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships - 2024

The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies will support applications to the Leverhulme Trust Early-Career Fellowships 2024. The 2024 round will open on 1 January 2024. These enable early-career researchers to undertake a significant piece of publishable work and to advance to a more permanent academic position. The research may be in any subject area, with the exception of studies of disease, illness, and disabilities in humans and animals, and research that is intended to inform clinical practice and the development of medical applications.

Fellowships may be held at universities or at other institutions of higher education in the UK. Applicants must not yet have held a full-time established academic post at a UK university or comparable UK institutions. All candidates must be within four years of their doctoral thesis submission or have equivalent research experience by the time they take up the fellowship.  They must also either hold a degree from a UK higher education institution at the time of taking up the fellowship or at the time of application hold an academic position, such as a fixed-term lectureship or fellowship, in the UK. Those who are or have been registered for a doctorate at any time may apply only if they have submitted their doctoral thesis for the viva voce examination by the closing date of 4 p.m. on 22 February 2024. Due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trust will accept applications from candidates who submitted their doctoral thesis for examination between 22 February 2019 and 22 February 2020  if their work has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and they should explain their case in their application.  More details about the eligibility criteria are included in the 2024_ECF_Guidance available on the funder website.

Approximately 145 fellowships are available. The awards are tenable for 36 months and are not renewable. A Fellowship must commence between 1 September 2024 and 1 May 2025. The scheme is based on a pattern of joint support whereby the Leverhulme Trust will contribute 50% of the Fellow’s total salary costs (including National Insurance, superannuation and London allowance, where applicable) up to a maximum of £26,000 in each year of the award, and the balance is to be contributed by the host institution. The Trust’s contribution in subsequent years will normally increase in line with pay awards and normal increments up to the annual maximum of £26,000. The Trust’s maximum annual contribution will be pro-rated if the Fellowship is held on a part-time basis. The Fellow may request up to £6,000 per annum in research expenses to further his or her research activities.  The Trust will support requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period for health-related reasons, disability, or childcare commitments.

OSGA holds an annual internal competition to decide which application(s) will be put forward under the scheme. Those who are interested in applying for this scheme should note that following the OSGA's internal timeline and application procedure:

  • By  10 December 2023 (updated deadline), please express your interest in applying for an LT ECF by emailing research@area.ox.ac.uk  and CC francesca.tucci@area.ox.ac.uk (subject line your name and "LT ECF 2024") the Expression of interest form ( downloaded from the online form) or sending the file Expression of interest form as excel, your CV, and a statement of support from the proposed OSGA mentor.  The OSGA Research Committee will short-list candidates based on their expression of interest and CV.

  • By 10 January 2024, the shortlisted candidates will be invited to send a complete first draft of their application.  Please, DO NOT submit it via the Leverhulme Trust portal, but send a pdf file of your application (downloaded via the same portal) to research@area.ox.ac.uk  and in CC francesca.tucci@area.ox.ac.uk.  The OSGA Research Committee will then invite, following this stage, the short-listed candidates to deliver a 3-minute pitch of their research project to the OSGA selection panel (details will be provided via email to the shortlisted candidates).

  • The proposals selected for the OSGA's support will be invited to send the final draft of the application to research@area.ox.ac.uk  and in CC francesca.tucci@area.ox.ac.uk by 02 February 2024. Please, DO NOT submit it via the Leverhulme Trust portal, but send a pdf file of your application downloaded from the  same portal;
